Youth Access, Supervision & Independent Use Policy

Waiver of Liability and Assumption of Risk

Make your visit a fun and safe experience. Please observe all rules for your safety. Individuals who disregard rules or interfere with staff’s ability to do its duty will be asked to leave the facility.

• Always walk on the pool deck: NO RUNNING

• No horseplay in the pool.

• No diving in depths under five feet.

• Children under 8 years of age A parent, legal guardian, or responsible adult age 18 or older must remain on the pool deck or within the pool dome at all times.

• Children ages 8 years to 13 must have a parent, legal guardian or responsible adult age 18 or older on-site at all time.

• No food or drink allowed in the pool.

• No glass containers allowed in the water, pool deck or greenspace areas.

• Pool equipment – toys, balls, masks, fins, snorkels or inflatable swimming devices – is not allowed in crowded times. Lifeguards may grant permission to use equipment in the shallow end in uncrowded periods.

• All members must sign in. Member access is controlled by requiring check-in at the front desk and pool gate as well as key card access via electronic locks.

• Everyone MUST take a cleansing shower before using the pool.

• Bathers wearing diapers need to have tight fitting protective coverings.

• Diapers must be changed in designated diaper-changing area of restrooms.

• Do not use the pool when under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

• Lifeguards are in charge of pool safety at all times.

• Lifeguards have the authority to expel persons from the pool for infractions of the swimming pool rules.

• Please report all accidents and emergencies immediately to the lifeguard and 911.

• No person with a communicable disease, or who has been ill with diarrhea or vomiting in the last two weeks, may use the lap pool or wellness pool.

• Bathers with seizure, heart or circulatory problems are advised to swim with a buddy.

• Lifeguards are present to help supervise and enforce safety rules, but children are best supervised by parents.

• For health and maintenance reasons, swimmers must wear bathing apparel while in the water; gym trunks, cutoffs, and street clothes are not allowed.

• During open swim kickboards are only allowed for swimming laps.

• NO DOGS OR PETS AT ANY TIME; see below for service animals.

Service Animal Policy

In accordance with the Washington Administrative Code (WAC) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), service animals are permitted within the Lopez Swim Center facility.

A service animal is defined as a dog that is individually trained to perform specific work or tasks for a person with a disability.

The following conditions apply:

• Service animals are permitted in all public areas of the facility, including the pool deck.

• Service animals are not permitted in the pool water.

• Service animals must remain under the control of their handler at all times, either by leash, harness, or voice control.

• Service animals must be housebroken.

• If a service animal is out of control or not housebroken, staff may request that the animal be removed from the facility.

• Staff may ask only two questions if the need for the service animal is not obvious: Is the dog required because of a disability? What work or task has the dog been trained to perform?

• Staff may not request documentation, require special identification, or ask about the nature of the individual’s disability.

Pool Equipment & Toys Rules

Pool toys ALLOWED during OPEN SWIM:

• Noodles are only allowed in the shallow end of the Lap Pool and in the Wellness Pool
• Coast Guard approved life vests (shallow end only)
• Goggles, masks, and snorkels
• Soft balls (i.e. nerf balls, etc.)
• Diving rings, sticks, toy

Pool toys NOT ALLOWED at any time, unless under the direct supervision of lifeguards or program staff:

• Squirt guns of any type or size
• Water balloons
• Non-Coast-Guard approved life vests, like water wings (unless accompanied by an adult within arm's reach at all times)
• Frisbees
• Hard balls (i.e., tennis balls, etc.)
• Inner tubes, rafts, water mattresses
• Kickboards & fins (except when being used for lap swim)
